This is our route for Day Two. We planned to go from Egilsstaðir to Lake Mývatn, up to Húsavik, then over to Akureyri. We hadn't been on this side of Iceland before so we wanted to take our time and stop whenever we wanted. Here are some pics:
Our windows were so fogged from sleeping in the car we had to stick our heads out the window to see the road. It started getting light out at around 4 in the morning so we were all pretty much awake by 6 am which is when the community pool opened. We drove there and had relaxing showers and a dip in their outdoor heated pools and hot tubs for an hour.
Lake Mývatn boiling hot springs
Smelled very very very strongly of sulfur
The actual lake of Mývatn
It is less than 5 feet deep around. Since 2000, a marathon around the lake takes place in the summer.
The only thing worth seeing (other than spending a lot of money on a whale watching tour) in Húsavík, the Penis Museum.
Húsavík
After driving down dirt roads with plenty of pot holes, I got quite frustrated and turned the wrong direction on the ring road. We had to double back to catch the heavenly Goðafoss.
A couple km outside of Akureyri is the Christmas House, a place with tons of Christmas candy, nutcrackers, ornaments and the like. Another one of Veronica's favorite places.
View of Akureyri from base of the church
The church in Akureyri. We ended up going to the pool in Akureyri which was quite relaxing and a lot of fun. We found a restaurant celebrating their 40th anniversary and offering cheap meals where we ate dinner. Then back to the car it was for night two of sleep. We parked parallel to the wind this time which worked much better.
